When soccer was stopped for pandemic,
A sport once, in the UK, endemic,
But they soon found a way,
To continue to play,
You might well wonder why. Academic.
When all sport, not just soccer, was brought back during the pandemic, I initially found myself wondering what the point was, where the enjoyment was, in doing everything behind closed doors. And then I realised…

Sport is definitely not the same behind closed doors. Without all the live sport screened on television during the lock-down, I think I would have gone crackers.

I think it was ITV4, re-ran old soccer tournaments. I definitely remember seeing one from Euro ’96 and another from Mexico ’86, that was good enough for me. I think the 1979 Arsenal Man U cup final was on at some point, too. That one was a real classic.

I have never been to a stadium during a professional soccer game, and the one time I attended a professional baseball game, I was kind of bored by the third inning. I truly prefer watching sports on TV, so you can see instant re-plays and grab snacks during commercial breaks.

You get a better atmosphere live but far better images on tv. I remember in recent years watching stages of the Tour de France. You’d wait 3 hours for the cyclists to arrive, you’d be craning past 3 layers of people tp get a view, then they’re gone in 5s! TV any day!

It’s not the same. I miss the crowds and miss hearing half my family at the Arsenal lol.
