Going to go with ummm Thomas Bowdler, sounds an intelligent sort of name.

Bowdler was a real person, but I think he was around 1800, so a lot earlier. to Bowdlerise? I remember we were taught that in English, I think it means to censor, he took something, famous work, forget what, and took out all the juicy bits to make it suitable for children.
I could have guessed this because I knew Fowler did something along these lines, but I couldn’t have said what.
