We had wildfires, life hung by a thread,
Homes destroyed and inhabitants dead,
Thought it might ease our pain,
When it finally rained,
But we now just have flash floods instead.

yup. There were monster floods in Germany this time last year. Houses washed away.

I was okay, just a bit worried in case the wheatfield behind us went up.
First time I ever heard of homes being destroyed by wildfires in the UK.
