inspired by Fandango’s One Word Challenge (FOWC) of 6 July 2021, essay.
One essay, then he’s out of the race,
Approached standards with speed and with grace,
When he got there, the pole,
It got lodged in a hole,
Snapped in two; he fell flat on his face.
Apparently in the pole vault, you have the bar, which is the thing they have to jump over. The two things that hold the bar in place above the ground are called the standards. Who knew?

A little knowledge…

I did not know that either! Originally, I thught this poem could also be about someone doing an essay for school until I saw your description that ‘standard’ is actually a pole vaulting term.

oh yes, I guess that works, too. I had in my mind the French essayer, to try, to attempt, when I wrote this. Just something a little different to writing. But, yeah, works for both.

Ah, thank you for clearing that up. I missed the connection between “essay” and pole vaulting.

what I really wanted to do was to use the verb rather than the noun, but it just worked into the poem that way.
