One Horizon

You know how we hear that AI is going to do this, going to do that? And if you’re anything like me, you give these claims a cursory “yeah, yeah”? And thinking “wait ’til the lawyers get involved”?

Personally, I struggle to differentiate between whether something does actually use some form of AI, or whether it is some slick piece of marketing, designed to impress us.

Anyway, YouTube sent me to this song yesterday. I found the track very pleasant, so looked up at the screen and saw it was sung as a duet between Bob Marley and John Lennon. Now, in real life, these two artists were never even in a studio together, and sure enough, the publisher freely admits that this is AI-generated.

But it kinda works, don’t you think? What do you reckon?

    • I’ve only ever used it to generate art and while I find the results are impressive, I find myself spending a lot of time actually defining the image I want to create.
I mean, it’s still impressive, that it can even create a vaguely accurate image, but I suspect that will be a common problem, people being trained to use a form of words that the particular AI engine understands.
And it’ll only take one lawsuit that upholds that such-and-such an effort has breached someone’s copyright before all these AI tool creators will start running for cover.

    • I recognise a lot of the Marley material from the vid of One Love, don’t particularly recognise the John Lennon stuff. But I wonder whether the pictures were put together by AI or by a human. I found the voices haunting because each one is distinctive.

    • thinking about it, a duet between them seems entirely possible. They struck me as like-minded, at least enough to have collaborated. I know Marley did stuff with Stevie Wonder.
