Inspired by Fandango’s One-Word Challenge (FOWC) of 29 March 2023, fallacy.
A straight-haired young urchin called Shirley,
Thought her lacklustre mop made her surly,
Lunchtime sandwich was thrust,
Mum said “Finish the crust,
If you do then your hair will turn curly.”

I wonder where this old wives’ tale comes from.

It must have been – eat everytrhing, don’t waste a thing, surely? I wonder when it came from? Wartime, perhaps?

A quick Google leads to a post on WordPress, which claims it dates back to 1917, and had nothing to do with frugality but rather a fashion for shorter hairstyles as women started working outside the home and safety (re long hair) became a concern.

I guess Mum was an old wife.

My mum always said in cockney East London, Eat your crusts and you will get curly hair. I ate my crusts but never got the curls. Now I am 76 years old and the only change is the gray highlights.

I reckon everyone’s mum said that, even the Ameriocans got it. It was a toss-up between this and carrots 🤣

How funny, I always thought my grandma made that up! I’ve always hated my curls, so I intentionally took off the crust, it didn’t matter!
