Last week, Jim (NewEpicAuthor, A Unique Title For Me) set a theme of our hometowns (my selection). This week, he gives us the theme of isolation.

This week I am choosing a Billy Idol song, it fits the prompt, plus I like his music and have a couple of his albums. I always thought of Billy Idol as the acceptable face of punk. He certainly looked the part with his bleached, spiky hair and his high-tempo music. But, is it me, or have I heard a lot of his songs in soundtracks, consumed by the Hollywood machine? Conformity is definityely not a punk thing!
But the songs are catchy, and this one is no exception. It was first released by Idol’s original band, Gen-X, in the UK in 1980, then re-released in the US, Idol this time singing solo, in 1981. The song only reached #62 in the UK, but reached #27 on Billboard’s Dance chart.
I thought Dancing With Myself was a good fit for today’s prompt. At the moment, we’re doing a lot of things with ourself. The song was written as a collaboration between Idol himself, and Gen-X band member Tony James.
On the floor of Tokyo
Billy Idol, Tony James
Or down in London town to go, go
With the record selection
And the mirror’s reflection
I’m dancing with myself
When there’s no-one else in sight
In the crowded lonely night
Well I wait so long
For my love vibration
And I’m dancing with myself
Oh dancing with myself
Oh dancing with myself
Well there’s nothing to lose
And there’s nothing to prove
I’ll be dancing with myself
If I looked all over the world
And there’s every type of girl
But your empty eyes
Seem to pass me by
Leave me dancing with myself
So let’s sink another drink
‘Cause it’ll give me time to think
If I had the chance
I’d ask the world to dance
And I’ll be dancing with myself
Oh dancing with myself
Oh dancing with myself
Well there’s nothing to lose
And there’s nothing to prove
I’ll be dancing with myself
If I looked all over the world
And there’s every type of girl
But your empty eyes
Seem to pass me by
Leave me dancing with myself
So let’s sink another drink
‘Cause it’ll give me time to think
If I had the chance
I’d ask the world to dance
And I’ll be dancing with myself
Oh dancing with myself
Oh dancing with myself
If I had the chance
I’d ask the world to dance
If I had the chance
I’d ask the world to dance
If I had the chance
I’d ask the world to dance
[Scat]
Dancing with myself
Dancing with myself
Dancing with myself
Dancing with myself
If I looked all over the world
And there’s every type of girl
But your empty eyes
Seem to pass me by
Leave me dancing with myself
So let’s sink another drink
‘Cause it’ll give me time to think
If I had the chance
I’d ask the world to dance
And I’ll be dancing with myself
Oh dancing with myself
Oh dancing with myself
If I had the chance
I’d ask the world to dance
If I had the chance
I’d ask the world to dance
If I had the chance
I’d ask the world to dance

Good choice! Love this one and it makes me miss the 80s! 😊

I always thought of Billy Idol as being punk, but I understand what you said about punk being on the outside and not commercialized.

I happened to be watching The Wedding Singer on one of our comedy channels the other week, and he even popped up at the end of that. I think! It looked like him to me, anyway. And, certainly playing Billy Idol.

Great choice. Now, don’t go and do yourself a mischief with all this dancing!

Whenever this song was played at school dances, the floor would be packed. The original #togetherapart. Lol :). Nice pick me up and great choice 🙂

Perfect choice today! I might have to add that to my playlist when I do my hula hoop workout. I have Alexa to keep me company so I’m not alone. 🙂

You should get 2 Alexas so they can just talk to each other all day. We had none this time last year, but now have three of these things. I even managed to schedule my bedroom light to tunr on at 9pm each night, ready for when I finally go to bed.

I have a Bose. I won Alexa at Christmas during a White Elephant gift exchange. I haven’t tried to put them together. Hmmm! Sounds like a wedding to me. 😂

I started off with a Google Home Mini to control my light, wife liked the idea so got an Alexa to do the light in her bedroom. They were so successful that I got a full-size Google thing for the kitchen (I won’t buy from Amazon). I got a Spotify subscription so both Googles share it and can play whatever music I want.

I’m glad you liked it, I was quite pleased to have thought of that one too, and I liked Billy Idol. In fact, I liked a lot of punk and Billy was very soft-core in comparison.

Well, it was a great choice and I like Billy Idol’s style. I hear White Wedding frequently on the classic rock radio station in my area.
