In computing, a GUID is a common term. A globally-unique ID. It does what it says on the tin – it is a one of a kind, not another one in the world. Make the most of this one, it’ll never be repeated.

It is generated from several things, but I’m not sure how. One of them is the network card, or these days, the wi-fi card. Every one in the world has a different serial number, which in turn means this id is unique. It must be based on the clock too, because if I generate one in 5 minutes, it’ll be different to the last one. It’s one of these things that has crept in with the internet.
