Intellect in Isolation #2

After the question the other day received more likes than I expected, how about aother bit of trivia for you? This one will be easy for some of you, because you were born in this year so will recognise it immediately.

Do me a favour, this time, though. By all means comment on which clue gave the game away, but don’t write the answer itself, just in case it spoils it for someone else.

I’ll post the answer, in a comment, at (or just after) 8am GMT tomorrow (Friday). I shall keep you in suspense until then.

You can look this answer up if you like, but I’ll be impressed if you don’t need to! Again if anybody can figure out a better title, I’m all ears.

Without further ado, what was this year?

  • In the UK, McMillan became Prime Minister (so note, not for the entire year) (this clue got me close)
  • POTUS was Dwight Eisenhower, and his Veep was Tricky Dicky,
  • and the president of the USSR was Kruschev
  • Humphrey Bogart died in this year.
  • Sometimes wanna kill your partner? In New Zealand, the last person to be executed died in this year. He poisoned his wife.
  • Civil Rights. The governor of Arkansas calls out the National Guard to prevent black students enrolling in high school, in Little Rock.
  • Camp Nou, home of the mighty Barcelona soccer team, opens
  • The Bridge on the River Kwai is released (this clue got me the exact year)
  • The laser was invented, by Gordon Gould
  • The very first US rocket, Vanguard, blew up on the launchpad

And in music, we had amongst others

  • The musical West Side Story premiered
  • A Memphis, Tn mansion became Graceland after it was bought by Elvis
  • Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel became Tom and Jerry
  • John met Paul
  • Buddy Holly and the Crickets release their debut album, The Chirping Crickets
  • Elvis released All Shook Up, Fats Domino sang about Blueberry Hill
  • and, The Everly Brothers released this classic:

  1. I am going to guess again, I think somewhere in the fifties. Because of The River Kwai and when John could meet Paul. 1954 is my wildest guess. I don’t like to Google it because that spoils all the fun!

          1. We do well here and we’re having fun, it takes some adjustments and some getting used to. Pierre works from home, so I have a lot of time for myself. We’re coping. We only go out for bread or groceries, once a week so that is quite minimal. I blog, read, cook and try to stay calm. It’s nice though that you can keep in touch through the phone. Must be difficult for your mother in law too. At least we have our nice community here on WP to also keep in touch and to vent when needed 😊

            1. M-i-l seems to be losing the plot. A neighbour offered to get food and leave it on her doorstep. She refused, because one of the girls can get it when they go see her next. Wife said very clearly, I have no intention of coming to see you while this is on! I don’t know about the others, that is for them.
Does Pierre need to concentrate? If so you will need to be ultra quiet! I used to have to concentrate to do my job, wife never understood. “Work from home” never really worked well.

              1. With parents-in-law it isn’t easier sometimes. They don’t feel old, so …. We just do groceries but it’s no fun for them not being able to do even that for themselves. (and we need to que before the supermarket and keep social distance while shopping!) And father-in-law’s birthday is coming up!
Pierre makes long hours behind the computer but as I was raised not to be seen and certainly not to be heard, that doesn’t pose a problem. I sit and read or blog. And I’m going to paint and decorate the attic for me, to have a space and not to disturb anybody.
Work from home seems to work well but imo you need to set strict boundaries what is worktime and place and what is not. We’ll see how it goes as we are in it for the long run I’m afraid. Is your wife coping well? I can imagine she has tons of work and stress!

  2. Fun challenge! I remember several of the clues from when they actually happened, so I have a rough idea of the year – maybe. The record Blueberry Hill – we had a 78 vinyl record of this and I played it a lot. πŸ™‚

    1. Hahaha. Bet you fot it instantly, then. Several of the clues put it within two or three years (including John and Paul), one or two gave me the exact year (Kwai, Buddy) and stuff like the civil rights and Bogart got me no closer than an educated guess of the decade. But I wasn’t even born until 10 years later!
