Song Lyric Sunday (26 January 2020) – Duets

Last week, Jim (NewEpicAuthor, A Unique Title For Me) set a theme of songs featuring Tom, Disk or Harry (my choice). This week, he gives us the straightforward theme of duets.

When I read Jim’s theme, I remembered quite quickly that there was an album released in the early Noughties, a Robbie Williams album, which was almost entirely duets. The album was called Swing When You’re Winning, which was a pretty direct reference to a chant heard at British soccer grounds, so I’m not sure it translated well anywhere else. I’m not a big Williams fan but I did enjoy this album, plus he was so successful at the turn of the century, he got a lot of airtime.

So I started listening to songs from this album to see if any of them might be suitable to present on SLS. And I then got onto his second swing album, Swings Both Ways, on which I found the perfect track. It took him a while to get to this second album (2013), but I guess he must’ve had a few other things going on!

This one was recorded especially for the album and was a collaboration between Williams and Olly Murs. I hope you enjoy it!

I’m the king of the swingers
Oh, the jungle VIP
I’ve reached the top and had to stop
And that’s what botherin’ me
I wanna be a man, mancub
And stroll right into town
And be just like the other men
I’m tired of monkeyin’ around!

Oh, oobee doo
I wanna be like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you, too
You’ll see it’s true
An ape like me
Can learn to be human too

Now don’t try to kid me, mancub
I made a deal with you
What I desire is man’s red fire
To make my dream come true
Now, give me the secret, mancub
C’mon, clue me what to do
Give me the power of man’s red flower
So I can be like you

I wanna be like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you, too
You’ll see it’s true
An ape like me
Can learn to be human too

Now I’m the king of the swingers
Oh, the jungle VIP
I’ve reached the top and had to stop
And that’s what botherin’ me
I wanna be a man, mancub
And stroll right into town
And be just like the other men
I’m tired of monkeyin’ around!

Swing to the left, swing to the right
Put your hands up if you’re lovin’ life
Oh I’m lovin’ life

Swing to the left, swing to the right
Put your hands up if you’re feelin’ nice
Oh I’m feelin’ nice

Oh, oobee doo
I wanna be like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you, too
You’ll see it’s true
An ape like me
Can learn to be
Like someone like you
Can learn to be
Like someone like you
Can learn to be
Like someone like you
