Just One Question

This is my response to this week’s Flashback Track Friday prompt, where we were challenged:

What would you ask God, if you had just one question?

I’m gonna respond to this week’s prompt with some music of my own.

This is Tracy Chapman. It comes from her debut, eponymous album which was a big influence on me when I was about twenty.

The name of the song, appropriately, Why?

And religious people will happily tell you – all the bad stuff is because of mankind.

So, God does all the good stuff. Mankind screws it up. Convenient. If God made a species which screws everything up so badly, he did a pretty poor job, don’t you think?

I’ll use the masculine pronoun just to follow convention.

Ah, he gave it the freedom of will to make mistakes? Pity he couldn’t have also stretched to giving it the intelligence not to make mistakes in the first place.

I mentioned in the original post that people might struggle to imagine that a god existed. I’m one of those people.

There are so many unanswered questions in life, and I’m afraid I never found a religion which could answer them to my satisfaction. If other people do find answers, that’s for them to reconcile, but supreme beings don’t cut it for me.

I read a post a while ago. Thank you God, for delivering me from COVID. I had to laugh. You have to be even handed, here. If someone has the power to “deliver” someone from COVID, then logic dictates he also has the power not to cause it in the first place. Or, not to make it so spreadable? Or fatal?

Worldometers just now is showing 5,823,199 deaths due to COVID. Who knows how many more have never been counted?

If something had the power to prevent all this, that’s a bit callous, don’t you think, to let it happen? I’m certainly sure I wouldn’t want to be worshipping something like that.

  1. This whole god thing seems rather silly to the rational mind. Unfortunately, the whole god thing is probably responsible for many more deaths across the ages than COVID. People do crazy things in God’s name.
