inspired by Fandango’s One Word Challenge (FOWC) of 27 October 2021, title.
When his general had vanquished the horde,
King unsure what to give as reward,
Should he make them a duke?
Might a baron rebuke?
Should he settle for humble old lord?
For all those people lucky enough to live in republics, this is how titles work in the UK. Your ancestor screwed someone over on behalf of the ruler? Then you’re in! There’s no merit in it at all.

Looks like none of my ancestors did any screwing on behalf of……..

Good for you, buddy. If everyone had behaved like that, just think how much better the world would be.

We, the former colonials are very impressed by these titles.

I’m not sure, really, whether people are here.
None of it impresses me, but equally, other people wax lyrical about them. I think there is very little rumpus at the moment, because our queen is seen generally as a good queen, and people generally equate the manarchy with the queen. But I can imagine, as soon as we have a “bad” king or queen, the whole system will be questionned.

I think it should be questioned now that people have moved passed the regal glamour.

Yes, exactly. People should be able to choose their head of state, I think. It may be that the person chosen is our present ruler, but at least then they would have the legitimacy of being elected. I suspect Pakistan is ahead of us here – a lot of newer countries seem to have thought about this issue and have come up with good solutions.

Because we never had monarchy, otherwise we also would be clinging to it.

No, titles do not impress me but it is your countries history to have royals. I would say here many people
are screwed over and the titles they receive are not worth mentioning.

you’re ie, right? The mechanism for electing the president I like (from what I know). That Higgins is HoS without being political, I like. I’m not sure we’d get that here.
I’m less enthusiastic about the dail.

Technically, we Canadians are subjects of Queen Elizabeth II, too, hehe. There is also merit in the Arts, right? Like The Beatles, or Sir Sean Connery?

that’s a moot point. How do yiou judge merit? Immigration here is largely dependent on promised salary, which doesn’t seem right. It excludes people we specifically need to fill lower-paid jobs.

Yeah, that is an issue with immigration here, as well…

That’s the trouble. Everything revolves so much around money that nobody knows how to measure anything else.
