Life through the Lens (29 August 2021)

When my eyesight was still good, I was a bit of an amateur photographer. This is one of mine.

This is the Pont Gustav Flaubert in Rouen, France. The city was Flaubert’s birthplace (the author of Madame Bovary) and one of my favourite haunts. It is only 50km/30mi from the port so we would often weekend there. Though the city is industrial now, it has a wonderful old centre.

This bridge is unique because the whole thing raises, roadway and all, on those columns, to allow tall ships to pass underneath, but the reason I took this photo was also that array of bollards stretching off into the distance – I’ve obviously tried to squeeze both in to the frame. The river you see is the Seine, wending its way from Paris, through Rouen, up to the coast at Le Havre.
