Nudge, Nudge

I’ve had Android phones for, like, fifteen years. Over that time, I’ve installed plenty of apps, which are taken across every time I upgrade the phone itself. Probably ten years ago I hit a limit – every useful app was pretty much already installed.

The upshot is that it is very rare indeed for me to install new apps these days.

Two apps, however, that I have installed recently are the WordPress app, when I moved my blog to WordPress, and the Spotify app, when I finally bought a subscription. Both in the last few months.

In that time, my phone started misbehaving. Specifically, it would beep when a notification arrived. Even in the middle of the night – beep, beep – bastard!

Suspicion fell on these two apps. But why would Spotify beep me at all, especially in the middle of the night? Of course, I looked at my phone’s list of notifications, but could not see anything suspicious in there.

It is true that, when I installed the WordPress Android app, I allowed it to send notifications, just on the basis that it would send them sensibly.

So, a few days ago, I changed one of the settings, in the app itself, to turn off notifications. But they kept coming, any time you like.

Of course, that might well indicate that this problem was nothing whatever to do with WordPress, but I wasn’t satisfied.

So, yesterday I went into the phone’s system settings, and revoked permission for the WordPress app to send any kind of notifications. Specifically, just on that one app. The other hundred-odd were still able to send notifications, if they chose.

Last night, I enjoyed my first uninterrupted night’s sleep for weeks.

Badly behaved WordPress? You decide. Let’s just say that in my few months on here, I have heard one particular theme probably above all others.

    1. It amazes me just how *untested* any of this. Really obvious problems which make the things fall flat. I’ve seen the same on their web site, all of a sudden a vital scrollbar will disappear, and you kind-of think somebody should be noticing this before it goes live.

  1. I set my iPhone on Do Not Disturb at night when I go to bed. As a result, all notifications are silenced and there are no pings or beeps to interrupt my nightly sleep. Just occasional bad dreams and having to get up and pee in the middle of the night almost nightly!

    1. I’ve never really looked into how it happens, but I don’t have to set anything at night, and the phone is normally well-behaved. I just assumed that Android used its clock/motion sensors to deduce that the owner was asleep. There must be something like that, because it will start beeping not long after I’ve picked it up.

  2. Is the WP app useful? Or does it only beep-beep on ungodly hours? I don’t trust apps that much because they almost always ask permission to a lot of information.
I didn’t find a lot of useful apps in general. I have one that calculates when I need to go to bed and sends me a gentle reminder and that’s it. One app for banking. And one to send gif’s through whatsapp and whatsapp. I do have a new phone so maybe I’ll start taking puctures or make movies.

    1. I don’t use the WP app much. Mainly if I have been out for several hours and am sitting on a bus, to look at my notifications. One annoying habit it has: you know on the web site, you have a list of unread notifications, and they just change the background colour as you read them? Well, the Android app disappears them off the unread list altogether. Often I don’t have sufficient internet access to read the post/comment, and the notification is just lost. I have to try and remember that this has happened and look in my “all” list when I get home.
An invaluable app is called FotMob – soccer scores 😆.

      1. Oh yes Pierre has soccer scores coming through his watch! That’s just not for me 🙂
The app should be more convient then, if you need to ‘remember’ the notifications. I hope they will invent better apps in the future, one like yours to track the ‘sugar rates’! I didn’t want to install the wp app because it asked for my phonenumber and I’m not very keen to share that.
