Update

For anybody who might have been wondering, I have been made redundant. The job was useful in terms of having some cash in my pocket but it wasn’t a great fit in terms of my skillset, and I think that, over time, they realised that too. It feels ironic that they didn’t want to use the skills I did have, when they might well have helped the situation, and at the same time they missed a big deadline on my project around about Christmastime. I was hired specifically for that project, so the writing was on the wall even then. I’m not overly fussed about the job and somehow, I don’t think I will be the only person out of the door.

So that gives me more time for WP, right? Well I’m managing to keep up with reading, but I drastically reduced the number of blogs I followed when I was working, and I haven’t really increased that. I might do, but…

I don’t really have any more time on my hands. I resolved to keep my hand in with tekky stuff, but also, back at christmas, I came up with the idea for a novel, so I’m splitting time between the two, fussing the cat and taking the odd afternoon nap. So a lot of the last few months has been developing plots, characters, scenes etc. and for about the last month I’ve embarked on the actuall writing. I’m at about 6,000 words so far. That’s slower than I’d first hoped, and reckon it’ll be a long haul to get to standard novel size of around 75,000 words. But there’s no reason why I shouldn’t write something well rather than quickly, and mostly it will be just aimed at my own satisfaction, I think.

So at this point, I’m not sure whether to call myself an IT professional, a retiree, or a writer. But you guys can continue just to call me an asshole!

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’ve been made redundant.

As you say, you’ll have more time for your novel, in addition to your profession in IT that you can perhaps continue as a freelancer

  2. We’re always writers, whatever else happens to us. Good luck with the writing, don’t set yourself a word target, just keep writing, a story is as many words as it takes to tell that story. Definitely don’t worry about time targets, it’s not school or work, just enjoy writing.

  3. Bang it out in whatever way suits your purposes. We’re all waiting and will be delighted to see you back in whatever form. Bummer with the IT position. But then newbie managers and some of the old dogs have ka-ka for brains and don’t know hoe to utilize resources to their company’s mission’s purpose.

  4. Hey Pete, how’s the novel going? Just learned about your work thing, I’m really sorry about that. But I’d love to read your novel if you decide to publish it. – Janis

    • I’ve just firished writing it, and am not reading it back and polishing it up. It took 5 months to get the works down, and I reckon another 2 before it is fit to show anybody. Janis is that you? From Saudi?

      • Yes, it’s me! I actually sent you an email about a month ago. Wow—two months isn’t too long a wait after all! I haven’t been in touch because of some health issues. I’m still managing them, but I’ve come to terms with it and feel a lot less heavy about things now 😀 It’s really nice to reconnect with you, Pete. I’m looking forward to your finished product—I’m sure a lot of your blog friends are too!
