These last months I’ve had just one fixation,
Hatched a plan then made great preparation,
And I had it all nailed,
Caught the bus, train, then sailed,
Off to France for my summer vacation.
It’s the first time I’ve been away, solo, since my stroke. That’s eight years. I regard this as a big deal, une très grande chose.
So I’ll say nothing of the mountain of anxiety, which never used to be there, and just wade into a quick slideshow. This is one of my boltholes from my single days, chosen specifically again now, because of the proximity of everything. I’ve seen Saint Malo in the middle of December, when it hardly got light and I was pelted by rain, but it’s never looked better than last week.

I hope you had a great time!

I’m not sure I ever saw a movie set there but I’m not a big movie buff. A great location.

That movie is on Netflix. It’s about WWII. Very well written and made

Netflix, huh? I got a trial subscription many years ago, searched for “Schwarzenegger” and got zero results back. On that basis, I figured it wasn’t any good. Arnie was top of the tree at the time – everything he did was a smash hit.
Is it a French-language film? French cinema was always far better than English or American, but I can’t handle the subtitles any more.

No it’s in English. Now Netflix makes most of its own movies. No arnie here but Hugh Lorrie who was in The house.

Oh yeah, I’ve known him since boyhood. Did you know, he started off very much as a comedy actor? Very different to the House character – I found that one very samey.

Yes he does good comedy too. But I liked his role in House

yep, ideeal and with a cooling sea breeze. I love that sand/sea/rocks combo – you get that in a lot of south-western UK / north-western France. But just show me a wide expanse of “beach”, and I’m bored already 🙂

Thanks, Misk. The most tedious part of this one was getting myself to Portsmouth – the drive used to be just 45 minutes but these days it’s just faff.

Yeah, they came out well. I mean, they’re just snaps, but this phone takes decent pics. Once upon a time I’d have been lugging my SLR around, not any more. But I still have all the software I used when I used to take it seriously. Plus, the weather helped 🙂

Thanks, Michele. Now… back to real life. Haircut yesterday, grocery delivery this morning and work again tomorrow. Cats have almost forgiven me – but I suspect it’ll be complete when they smell the chicken I ordered for them 🙂

It’s really pretty, it almost reminds me of Mexico in some places.

It was an experiment tbh,to see whether it is worth going away or better just to stay home. But yeah, it was good just to habe that different environment, be immersed in a different language, so there were definite positives.

Well done, it’s really difficult to contemplate, let alone plan a solo holiday , especially if you anticipate possible problems like train strikes etc.

It was quite weird, I planned it to death, just coming from the perspective of “what do I do if x goes wrong?” I got a local bus and even followed things on Google Maps beforehand, just to make sure I had the locationof the bus stop nailed.
I never used to be like that, always just used to wing it.
I suppose I once had confidence that I could get myself out of anything I got myself into, where now I don’t.
I can see why people give up on travelling, tbh. But I don’t want to do that, yet.
