Who Won the Week (13 February 2022)

Prompt image for the Fandango's Who Won The Week prompt

I base these posts on Fandango’s Who Won the Week posts, and I use the opportunity just to look at my own newsfeeds.

I’m going right across to the other side of the world this week. Because it’s just so darned civilised!

New Zealand. The Nice Country. There was a protest against mandating COVID vaccines. Protestors camped out on the lawn outside their parliament. Lawn? Do you know what we have? Armed guards!

Anyway, the powers that be decided to dispel the protesters. See? They might well be civilised, but the one thing that authorities the world over don’t like is people protesting.

So do you know what these guys did?

Wait for it.

They turned the sprinklers on!

But these protesters were obviously more savvy than your average New Zealand protester. Do you know what happened in response? They dug trenches, sufficient to route the water away from their camp. I’m not making this up, honest!

Not to be outdone, the authorities came up with a new tactic to up the ante.

You’re not gonna believe this.

Through loudspeakers, they blurred out Barry Manilow’s Greatest Hits.

And these ingenious protesters responded with some music of their own, including Twisted Sisters’ We’re Not Gonna Take It.

And this, dear friends, is why I’m booked on the next flight out*!

    Excellent! Good for you.

… um… I’m making the mistake of assuming personal choice as a contribution to the battle against the climate crisis‡. If not that, well, I apologise.

‡ It would help if the damn airlines wouldn’t fly empty planes simply to ‘protect their routes’.

    • No you’re spot on.

I’ll tell you another. Last summer I went to France. Ferry. In those few short months when we weren’t persona non grata.

      Capacity of ferry: few thousand?
      Actual passengers – a hundred?

In fact because of those numbers it was a very pleasant trip over, but who was paying for those ferries to run empty every day? To burn all that diesel? It sure wasn’t Brittany Ferries.

  2. Ah hem, Barry Manilow is a very good singer, composer, and arranger. For some reason, it’s the “right?” response
to diss him. Sorry, But the man has a good voice with a very good range plus he knows how to arrange his music
to the best of the song. So Michele, I will just leave with my boa and dress cut down to there and walk out of the room
    shaking my head.
