Today’s Provocative Question, Fandango asked a question related to gun control, whether we thought politicians would finally act. His full question, plus my initial response, are here.
But I should have added something more.
What I should have said, even if we managed to adopt something, we just solved one half of the problem. We just took new guns off the streets.
Now, what do we do about all those already out there?

You’ve pointed out one of the worst parts of the whole gun problem Pete! Our politicians and lawmakers can’t find their ass with both hands, and dealing with such a complex and difficult problem taxes their limited mental (cognitive) resources. Figuring out what to do and how to handle the existing guns is well beyond them. In my opinion.

Some jurisdictions (cities, counties, states) are offering buy-back programs where people can turn in their handguns and rifles and walk away with cash in their pockets.

that’s a non-starter I think. If someone has the mindset that they will shoot a few dozen people, I doubt they’re gonna be willing to sell their gun to the government.
My suggestion would be to ban the sale of something required to operate a gun. The obvious thing is bullets, but do they also need e.g. oil? i.e. restrict the supply of some consumables so as to render the weapon itself unusable? Okay, people will have stockpiles of things but we’re hopefully reducing the numbers all the time.
