Last week, Jim over at A Unique Title For Me set a theme of spices (my selection). This week, he gives us the theme of size.
I got myself a Google speaker in the middle of last year, plus a Spotify subscription at Christmas, and I have to say I quite like the combination. Especially as I’m going to bed, I can tell it to play music by so-and-so, then instruct it to turn itself off after a set time.
Today I thought I’d present a song by one of my favourite night-time artists, Otis Redding. In fact this song dates from 1932, way before Otis, and was originally written by Jimmy Campbell, Reg Connelly and Harry M Woods, and originally performed by the Ray Noble Orchestra, with Val Rosing on vocals.
But Otis’s version, in 1966, is about the best-known. It was very “bluesy”, with Otis being backed by Booker T and the MGs. It peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100, and came in at #204 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. This is Try a little Tenderness.

You can never, never, never, never top Otis, great choice Pete. It seemed like this song was over, but Otis wanted to keep on singing, nice video. He is a real wild man in this song.

I am currently working on the theory that recordings of live performances are more likely to play globally than “official” videos. My latest experiment! I have a funny feeling that I read this was the only time he performed this song live.

I like how the song builds up slow then really starts going. It is good to see a live version of the old greats.

I think I read that this was the only live performance. In any case I’m working on the theory that recorded-live music is more likely to play globally that official videos. I’m fed up that half of the time they won’t play and that there’s nothing I seem to be able to do about it.

It’s good they were able to get the live performance taped then. The youtubes you post won’t play on your blog? Does it depend on which country is trying to view it?

No, my videos always play for me, but readers in the US, in particular, get error messages saying that they won’t play in that region. I complained to YouTube about it, that I cannot do a “safe” search, but they are automatons. It sometimes happens vice-versa when I listen to music posted by other people. Strangely, it can be music from, say, the Sixties, i.e. so old, you wouldn’t think anybody would care.

Most of the time when youtube videos won’t play within the post, I click on “youtube” at the bottom and it takes me directly to youtube, where they do play.
