Last week, Jim (NewEpicAuthor, A Unique Title For Me) set the subject of modal verbs (my choice). This week he gives us the subject of Thanksgiving.

I saw bounty and thought, jeez, one helluva task this week, but I got to food and relaxed. All the best songs are about food!
This one probably needs a little explanation. If you’re West Indian, or British, you’ll know the song as soon as I explain that a dutchie is a large cooking pot. The rest is actually quite easy – It a goh bun (it’s gonna burn), it a goh dun (it’s done, complete). After that, my choice makes perfect sense (to me!).
For those of you who follow my tick-tock posts, I think I will have more to say on the subject of the Birmingham, UK band Musical Youth, but for now, please enjoy their debut hit, Pass The Dutchie. This was released in 1982, when I myself was in my early teens, and was written and produced the band. This one reaching #1 in the UK, and in several other countries, and #10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
This generation
Musical Youth
Rules the nation
With version
Music happen to be the food of love
Sounds to really make you rub and scrub
[scatting] I say
Pass the Dutchie ‘pon the left hand side
Pass the Dutchie ‘pon the left hand side
It a goh bun, give me music, make me jump and prance
It a goh dun, give me the music, make me rockin’ at the dance
(Jah know!)
It was a cool and lonely breezy afternoon
You could feel it cause it was the month of June
So I left my gate and went out for a walk
As I pass the dreadlocks’ camp I heard them say
[chorus]
So I stopped to find out what was going on
‘Cos the spirit of Jah, you know he leads you on
There was a ring of dreads and a session was there in swing
You could feel the chill as I seen and heard them say
[chorus]
Cause me say listen to the drummer, me say listen to the bass
Give me little music make me wind up me waist
Me say listen to the drummer, me say listen to the bass
Give me little music make me wind up me waist, I say
[chorus]
You play it on the radio
A so me say, we a go hear it on the stereo
A so me know you a go play it on the disco
A so me say we a go hear it on the stereo
[chorus]
I say east, say west, say north and south
This is gonna really make us jump and shout
Great choice!

You’re probably too young to remember (I’m sure you are 🙂), but that was a really incendiary time. I can’t listen to this song without thinking of the riots in Handsworth, in Toxteth, etc. There was so much going on.

I was a little one when they had the riots in Toxteth. But people remember them and refer to them even today.
My Dadda spent his first two years of life in The Dingle, which is Toxteth area, before the family moved out to Speke.
I have lots of friends in Toxteth and I have often worked there (in the past when I lived up north).

Small world – I know/knew Dingle well. My parents moved to Hunts X, just about a year before I left, so I know Speke too. I spent a while up thee after they died, getting things straight. Lpl was not as bad as I remember it in the 80s! I only know Toxteth in passing – one of my friends lived in Rodney Street at the time of the riots so used to phone us with updates.

A very upbeat song thanks for sharing this.

Do you remember it? I read it did well over there but it seemed very British to me, I wasn’t sure it would work.

No, I am totally unaware of the riots in Toxteth and this song.

Early 80s. I think quite similar to maybe Rodney King over there, but more rich/poor than race, per se. A few inner cities, which happened mainly to be black, rioted. Toxteth was one such place.

Like Rodney King in that police did what they wanted, without regard to the law. People rebelled.

A dutchie is a cooking pot?!? Ok, I was wrong for years! I really thought (you’re going to laugh so hard at me) the song was about weed. From the Netherlands, the Dutch, the dutchie 🙂 🙂 I found it always such a remarkable song because the singer was so young! And it was recorded a long time ago. I thought those were very progressive days!!!
I really like the song and I’m glad I learned something today!

In later years, I learned that a Dutchie is also a Dutch-style bicycle. I have one! In England, we traditionally call them sit-up-and-beg, too – where your back is vertical. http://www.dutchie.co.uk/en-GB/you-and-your-dutchie
Did you come up with a song? It’d be really good if you managed join in maybe next week.

I have one too, a sit-up-and-beg 😂😂 I had a song in mind but I didn’t write a post. I wanted to post about ‘American Pie’ from Don McLean. I’ll see if I can get me to write for Sunday. Can’t promise anything at this point. But maybe it would make a good New Years resolution, to participate in one of the challenges 🙂

American Pie would’ve been brilliant! You’d have had all the Americans in raptures. I think my reggae is a bit way-out for them, I posted some Bob Marley a few months ago, even that was lukewarm.
I never look more than a week ahead, yesterday I put this post live and wrote one for next week’s post, it’ll just sit in Drafts until next Sunday. The only thing I need to do on the day is to sort the link out to Jim’s post. Spellings are a big thing for me so I’ll generally review it a few times during the week.

But Bob is the Best!! We have one of the eldest reggae festivals in Belgium in Geel. It’s called Reggae Geel and it’s going strong for 20+ years now.
After American Pie I changed my mind to One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer but that was too long of lyrics to post and I decided to play with the dog instead 🙂 I’ll check out the assignment for Sunday.

Geel? Ah, I see it. I do not know that part and have never heard of either Geel or the festival. One of my favourite artists since the 90s has been Tonton David, do you know him? I guess he is Parisian, but in Alsace now.

Don’t know him, I can always look him up 🙂 I found my song for Sunday. And I am writing the post right now, so no excuses to be made. I think I was over)-thinking things again!

The most popular here is a Dutch band. I’ve seen them live, they are older now but so good!

I just about got tv and Doris Day! I have a way to go!

They are so good, I know all the songs! Yes they say that there is nothing on the tv, except a movie with Doris Day. But there is a button, that can help you. Push the button and come out into the town for a good time. Then they bash the programs on the tv 🙂 The Dutch had really good music sometimes. But it will be no good for SLS I guess? 😦

I pretty much assume my audience is Eiglish-only. It’s funny, I was doing a couple of my tick-tock posts on the weekend and I decided I pretty much had to drop all of the French things I love so much – both music and film.

Do you? I don’t know, never thought about that. I was things to post a song from Jaques Brel once in a while. In Canada they speak French too no? A little different French but still. Or you can translate it loosely on the side. It’s your TickTock 🙂

True, I guess. Some people are really nice – they will look at and like everything I offer, I notice that others seem to prefer very anglo-saxon music. Just my hunch based mostly on SLS. Sorry, I have been distracted by the tv- a programme on about the effect the meat industry is having on the environment.

Watch the tv that is important stuff! Except a movie with Doris Day of course 😉

But playing with the dog… it could have been worse! Animals are so uncomplicated – show them love and they will respond the same. I prefer animals to (most) humans.
