Extinction Rebellion

I’m hearing about the Extinction Rebellion on the TV News. A day of protests is planned (worldwide) tomorrow.

I must admit, I have mixed feelings about them.

On the one hand, I agree with their cause. Over recent years, I’ve stopped flying and have even become mostly vegetarian, so I feel like I’m playing my part.

On the other hand, I don’t agree with the disruption that they cause for people.

But what do they do? They’re faced with organisations who don’t give a monkey’s about climate change, even now. Petrochems, in particular, pay lip service to climate change while carrying on as they have always done. In Brazil, logging seems to be increasing, not decreasing. In terms of raising awareness, maybe they feel it’s their only option?

Perhaps the environment is a special case, which makes their actions acceptable? Special, because we can all claim an interest. Is it therefore justified to take action, if someone else is harming it?

What do you guys think?

  1. I know that millions of people across the globe are expected to take to the streets Friday demanding their governments take greater climate action, in what is anticipated to be the largest climate protest in history. But I hadn’t heard anything about plans to disrupt things. I am all in favor of the cause, but I don’t support civil disobedience, especially if it could lead to property damage or personal injuries.

  2. I think the young are brainwashed by teachers and other peer groups into the climate change agenda by planting fear of death into their fragile brains. The world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t do something. A great many climate change followers have become akin to religious fanatics spouting “end of the world” hysterics much like bible thumping fanatics. They leave no room for reasonable discourse. In this context I keep thinking of the children’s crusade (around the 12th century) where children were brainwashed by religious fervour to help free the Holy Land from the Saracens. Most of them were captured and sold into slavery enroute. I believe in climate change. Except I believe that it’s more to do with the natural evolution of our planet related to the earths orbit (wobble) around the sun rather than any human phenomena. Cleaning up our planet is a whole different subject that somehow gets lumped into the climate change agenda. Who doesn’t want a clean planet free of pollution and who doesn’t want to rid the world of disposable waste and find other solutions. I believe that these problems will be solved in time with technology and scientific ingenuity.
