R-E-S-P-E-C-T

inspired by Fandango’s One Word Challenge (FOWC) of 28 October 2022, patronise.

Stopped by policeman, whose wrath I incurred,
My infraction? My mind is a blur,
On his high horse, he preached,
All the laws I had breached,
Then he added an afterthought, “sir”.

One of my pet peeves. Some jumped-up, uniformed asshole looks down their nose at you, then ends with a “sir” to feign respect.

  1. Wear the uniform for a while. Plug blood leaks in drunk drivers who’ve challenged an oak tree and lost. Try not to cry when you discover on occasion there was an infant in the back seat of the drunk’s auto. Mediate between the spouses whose spat has escalated from cute limerick hassle to dire physical threat. Direct traffic from a rock concert in the rain when all the departing attendees are of a mind that all cops are pigs and are proudly vocal about it or from a speedway on an insufferably hot summer afternoon when all homebound Cooters and BillBobs feel themselves Mario Andrettis. Deal with at least one dude every hour who feels himself above the law. I get the humor of the limerick. I do not get the comment suggesting (in any way) officers of the law are jumped-up assholes, not entitled to a bad day themselves, and the complainant may well have been entirely culpable insofar as deserving a bit of chastisement instead of (if he/she was lucky and not too much an asshole him/herself) a citation.
