Was wondering, do any of you have experience with either soya milk or oat milk?
Uses would be 50:50 porridge, and tea.
I’ve been reading how much lower in carbon these are, compared with anything “cow”.

All I can say is that I tried soya milk and it has a taste that I do not like, so I do not use it. I have a lactose allergy so avoid milk where I can.

I can drink it, but it’s not my preference.

thanks, David. I think that will probably be my same conclusion, but my requirement here is merely “acceptable”, just really to break the bovine link.

I’ve had both, and I would suggest getting vanilla flavored if that’s available. I like that kind of soy/oat milk better than “original” flavor. Of course they taste different than cow’s milk, so there’s a bit of an adjustment — but I’ve gotten to where I enjoy soy and oat milk, too.

thanks, Dave. That sounds like another one to try. I suspect I need to just try all of these.

I think oat milk works ok in tea!

I’d question the lower carbon thingy. Where are all these almond trees? Not in the UK, that’s for sure. Read this before you make a decision, B. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/shortcuts/2015/oct/21/almond-milk-quite-good-for-you-very-bad-for-the-planet

That is the part that’s beyond question, I’m afraid.

As Worms and I discussed yesterday, there are no simple answers. One solution is complicated by another.

there’s no complication whatever, in my mind. We need fewer cows and more plants.

Soy does not agree with me, oat I haven’t tried. I don’t really use much milk if I do I go Lactaid. In my tea I
just use my coffee creamer which isn’t really cream anyway lol

I like almond or oat milk in porridge and coffee. I haven’t found an alternative I like for tea.

So presumably tastes good in coffee but not in tea? Why was that?

Found it too sweet.

My wife uses flax milk for her morning bowl of oatmeal and she loves it.

Ah now that’s something I never even heard of. I’ll have to try searching for it here.

Having an intolerance to milk I often drink substitutes like oat, soya, almond etc.
When you get used to the taste, they are not so different from regular milk 🙂
I also like it with coffee 🙂

Thank you Farida, that is useful to know. Do you have a preference?

Chestnut milk is very good but also very high in calories 😉
The only one I don’t like too much is rice milk, especially if you need to use it for puddings and similar desserts.

I care nothing for calories; only carbs.

8% seems quite high but is tempered by having just a few ml

try goats milk instead. oat/soya/almond milks are pretty nasty to those of us used to cow’s milk.

thanks, but I want to get away from any animal products.

Oat milk in tea (I use quite a bit for a ‘creamier’ kind of taste but that’s just personal preference I guess).
Oat or coconut milk for porridge, cereal and sauces.
Hazelnut milk for bran flakes weetabix and coffee.
Little tip I find – pay the (slight) difference in price and buy the chilled milks from the fridge as opposed to the ones on the supermarket shelf. They have a much nicer taste. Oh, and avoid soya and rice milk. Both torture imo 😉🖤

Thanks. Can you freeze any of this?

No problem. Just my experience 😁
To be fair I’ve never tried freezing them – it’s not something I need to do. Google will most likely give you the best pointers.
I wouldn’t freeze oat milk though – think it would make the texture quite bitty 👍🖤

Give hemp milk a try. I like it on cereal, but not in coffee.

Almond Milk I didn’t even go near, because the Almond Milk here comes from California. That’s too far to travel.

Nice point! Though I really like almond milk better than the alternative, coconut milk…
