for the Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge of 1 May 2021, ruby.

My first thought when I saw the prompt this week was the song “Ruby Tuesday”. Which, if I’m honest, I can’t stand.

But it did prompt me to look on Spotify to see what other “Ruby” songs there might be. And I think I found a gem of my own in this track.

It’s called Ruby Falls, it is a US artist called Katie Crutchfield. She performs under the name Waxahatchee, and has a Wikipedia page here. Waxahatchee is the name of a creek where she grew up, in Alabama, and it sounded as though this was a solo musical project but I’m hearing male voices on some of her tracks, so perhaps not?

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a video of her actually singing this track, but I presume this is all low budget stuff. However, she has a beautiful voice and I think she’s well worth a listen. I’m listening to some of her other tracks as I write this (some of which have videos with a more personal touch), and she might well become somebody I listen to more often. I hope you enjoy it, too.

I should really have posted this response on our new Songshine site, shouldn’t I? My partner KK will be very impressed that I discovered some music less than 30 years old!

  1. Waxahachie is also a city in Texas just south of my home. It is the county seat of Ellis County and sits along the Waxahachie Creek. Founded in 1850, the name means “buffalo creek.” It is a very beautiful, pleasant town to visit.

Another “Ruby” song would be one by Kenny Rogers. “Ruby don’t take your love to town…”

  2. “Ruby Tuesday” is moment-in-time piece for me. Don’t recall (or try to) the words. It’s important for where I was when I heard it first. As such, I cannot dismiss it out-of-hand. Nice post.
