I always liked Fandango’s Who Won the Week post, and like to join in with some quirky stories from my own newsfeeds. All from our unique vantage points, the idea is to pick something (a person, organisation, anything) which “won” the week.
It’s All About Sex
I thought this week’s winner would be very appropriate, as some of us on here are published writers, some more of us are budding writers, and probably all of us know aspirational writers.
My award this week goes to the Literary Review magazine, for pure good taste.
In 1993, this magazine set up an award. This award is for the most outstandingly awful scene of sexual description in an otherwise good novel, it is called the Bad Sex In Fiction Award.
Seriously, sex is a hard (no pun intended) write. I, for one, find it totally daunting, and people – established authors – write it so badly that they coined this award! Above just being flippant, the award did have a serious purpose, though – to shame authors into writing better-quality material.
So why the has the Literary Rewiew won? Because they announced this week that they were cancelling this year’s award. Why? In their words – the public has suffered enough in 2020!
So, three cheers to the Literary Review for sparing us!
Oh, and if you wants to know just how bad bad sex is, here are some extracts from previous winners. This is a long article but trust me, it is hilarious. And if, while in the throes of passion, you ever felt yourself making a noise between a beached seal and a police siren, then you’ll know what I mean! (And if your partner ever made that noise, please let us all into your secret 🤣)
This made me laugh!! Thx

I tried my hand at writing erotica once. My wife read it and couldn’t stop laughing.

Like you said, sex sells and it doesn’t even have to be good. The cancelling of these awards seems ill-timed. If nothing else, people right now need some raunchy mind-numbing reading material to keep them from contemplating their own plight. Good write, friend. K.

That’s true enough, I suppose. Even bad sex. Funny, I used to joke with someone about a year ago how many more births would result from the pandemic, too.
