I could set my clock by Fandango’s Provocative Question (actually, I probably could, although I never tried). But Wednesay’s mean just ont thing. Today, Fandango asks:
What has been the strangest, weirdest dream that you can remember? What do you think triggered that dream?
Okay, I’ll warn you now, I’m gonna struggle with this one. I never seem to remember my dreams.
I know they happen last-thing at night. If I lie in (I used to do that a lot) then the dreaming would happen during the lay-in and could even affect my mood for the day (good or bad). But I could never remember the details.
Since I’ve been married. my wife has sometimes said something like I had a dreamn that you divorced me, and all I could say was: don’t worry, I’m not planning on divorcing you. Not unless you keep having these bloody silly dreams.
But remembering my own dreams? Forget it. Almost. I can remember one nightmare I used to have as a child. I guess I must have had it repeatedly, probably forced to tell the story to my mum, which is why I remember it.
We lived in the same house until I was 17 years old. It was a semi-detached house in one of the suburbs of Liverpool, UK. It was nothing special, built between the wars, quite nondescript.
Outside of this nouse was a lamp-post. Let me try and find an image of something similar.
There we go. That one is close enough to make my point.
Do you see those bits sticking out to left and right? Those were its arms.
And the lamp itself? That was its head, complete with scary hat.
Now, in my nightmare, this thing would come alive, would grow legs, and would chase me down the street.
To this day, I have no memory of where it was chasing me to. Maybe to the next lamppost? Maybe they were ganging up on me? Did it ever catch me? Well, I’m still here to tell the tale.
The scary thing is that one of the TV channels here (Channel 4) hit on this idea of making their logo come to life, and to have human qualities. These little fillips freak me out.
Go figure!

I had a recurrent nightmare as a child as well. Maybe I should have shared it on my own response to FPQ this week, but I chose another, equally disturbing in its own way, one. In my nightmare my mother and I were walking to the bus stop which was about two blocks from my childhood home. I saw a big grate in the gutter and it had a large enough opening that I could get in it. I got down in there and these mutant crabs came out of the dark, snapping their claws at me and scaring me. I howled for my mother to come get me out of the grate, but could see her walking away towards the bus that had showed up. I’d always wake up screaming. It doesn’t take any rocket science to figure out WHY I dreamt that. Abandonment issues are something I’ve always struggled with. Thanks for sharing YOUR nightmare. Now I feel less weird about mine!

That TV logo sure is freaky! It made me think of the aliens in The War of the Worlds (HG Wells). At least the logo means no harm, unlike the mean lamp post in your dream and the Martians in the book.

Wow, that sounds like a scary dream! One of my scariest dreams involved a classmate of mine having made a chemical weapon (this was in 1998, during Operation Desert Fox in Iraq) and using it on me. A classmate actually claimed to have some type of chemical “weapon” involving a battery and something else.

Anytime an inanimate object comes to life is scary and the things nightmares are made of. I remember a dream I had wear I was diving across a two lane bridge and all of a sudden it turned into a writhing snake and shook my car off of it and down into the cold, dark waters below. I always woke up right as the car was hitting the water.

For 30+ years, my hubby talked about the same recurring nightmare – of being chased by a spoon, fork, and plate! 😀

That’s scary. Just be cause they love to animate these in things like adverts, so must be a constant reminder.

Scary dreams sure leave an impression. I can see why the lamp post looks scary and would cause nightmares. I don’t know what the video is advertising, but that thing is creepy! I might have bad dreams now, from just the sound it makes.
