Last week, Jim (NewEpicAuthor, A Unique Title For Me) set a theme of songs featuring Tom, Disk or Harry (my choice). This week, he gives us the straightforward theme of duets.
When I read Jim’s theme, I remembered quite quickly that there was an album released in the early Noughties, a Robbie Williams album, which was almost entirely duets. The album was called Swing When You’re Winning, which was a pretty direct reference to a chant heard at British soccer grounds, so I’m not sure it translated well anywhere else. I’m not a big Williams fan but I did enjoy this album, plus he was so successful at the turn of the century, he got a lot of airtime.
So I started listening to songs from this album to see if any of them might be suitable to present on SLS. And I then got onto his second swing album, Swings Both Ways, on which I found the perfect track. It took him a while to get to this second album (2013), but I guess he must’ve had a few other things going on!
This one was recorded especially for the album and was a collaboration between Williams and Olly Murs. I hope you enjoy it!
I’m the king of the swingers
Oh, the jungle VIP
I’ve reached the top and had to stop
And that’s what botherin’ me
I wanna be a man, mancub
And stroll right into town
And be just like the other men
I’m tired of monkeyin’ around!Oh, oobee doo
I wanna be like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you, too
You’ll see it’s true
An ape like me
Can learn to be human tooNow don’t try to kid me, mancub
I made a deal with you
What I desire is man’s red fire
To make my dream come true
Now, give me the secret, mancub
C’mon, clue me what to do
Give me the power of man’s red flower
So I can be like youI wanna be like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you, too
You’ll see it’s true
An ape like me
Can learn to be human tooNow I’m the king of the swingers
Oh, the jungle VIP
I’ve reached the top and had to stop
And that’s what botherin’ me
I wanna be a man, mancub
And stroll right into town
And be just like the other men
I’m tired of monkeyin’ around!Swing to the left, swing to the right
Put your hands up if you’re lovin’ life
Oh I’m lovin’ lifeSwing to the left, swing to the right
Put your hands up if you’re feelin’ nice
Oh I’m feelin’ niceOh, oobee doo
originally written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B Sherman for Disney’s The Jungle Book

No, I only found it when I looked on the album. It was the video that did it for me.

A selection from a family favorite Disney film. What a fun and uplifting rendition of this classic song. Thank you for introducing it today.

That was such a fun one! I like the Jungle Book songs and I can appreciate mr Williams. He aged well, I see him doing well in a James Bond movie 🙂

I have a couple of his albums, but never really heard Olly Murs, except for his name. I’ve made a mental note to listen to some of his other stuff.

What a brilliant choice. Very enjoyable, and from the Graham Norton show which I love!

I remember me & my kids running around the house singing in a conga line singing this. Jungle Book was one of our all time favorite movies when they were growing up. Thanks for the memories!

Well, I’ve never seen that movie or heard that song, but I like this type of music. Seems so old fashioned. And the video was great. 🙂
